Return to Paint a Wood File Box: Step 2

Paint a Wooden File Box Step 3:

Antique & Add Medallions

To give your wooden file box an even more antiqued look, you can brush a brown wash on. First you need to make a wash. Pour a thumbnail size spot of brown acrylic paint into a paint palette or small dish. Add about a couple tablespoons of water. It doesn't have to be very accurate. You are just creating a thin brown wash to brush over the box.

Brush this wash across your the front of the box. Do only one side at a time. Immediately dab off the excess with a dry paper towel. I wanted a darker edge, so I only dabbed in the middle of the box, leaving the edges more antiqued. If you want to, you can repeat the process to darken the box even more. On this box, I only used one layer of wash.

Rather than work around the wood medallions, when applying a protective coating, I brushed acrylic finish onto the box first. I then used a spray-on finish on the medallions. Both finishes should be of the same sheen (i.e. matte, satin or gloss). I used a satin finish on this box.

After the finish has dried, use wood glue to attach the medallions to the front of the box. Apply wood glue to the back, then spread with your finger to get a smooth thin coat all the way to the edges.

Using a ruler, find the middle of your box, and position the first medallion over that. You can then glue the other medallions on either side of that, either by measuring, or eye-balling it, if you are good at that. I'm not very good at eye-balling, so I like to measure. Mine are positioned about 4 inches apart, from center to center. Position yours however you like, depending on your box size.

If you like, you can add handles to the sides of your box, making it easy to move around. Purchase file folders to match your box, or make your own decorative file folders. To see how I made the file folders you see below, click here.
