Paint a Wood File Box Step 2:
Paint Medallions & Crackle Finish
While the wood file box is drying you can paint the medallions. Be sure to get down in all the crevices. Set aside to dry.

Once the medallions are dry (about 15-20 minutes), mix up a wash of about half black paint and half water. Working with one medallion at a time, brush this wash over the medallion, making sure to do the edges too. Immediately wipe off excess paint. The black will settle into the crevices, as well as tone down the burgundy color. If the red is still too bright for your tastes, repeat the process and let the paint set for about half a minute before wiping. Repeat for each medallion. Allow to dry.

Following the instructions on the bottle (each brand is slightly different), coat the box with crackle medium. I did not crackle the top lip or inside of the box. I also left the back panel as I wanted to do something different there. Let dry until just slightly tacky. Do not leave it too long or it won't "crack."

Once the crackle is ready, paint your topcoat over the crackle medium. Load your brush with paint and use long smooth strokes. You can go back over a time or two quickly, but then leave it alone and keep going. It reacts pretty quickly, and too much brushing will ruin the finish.

Set it aside to dry and watch the magic of the crackle. It never ceases to amaze me!
