Design your own planner binder

Do you find the cost of a good planner binder a little steep? Maybe like me, you just can't find one that fits your lifestyle. There aren't many day planners that work for a stay-at-home, business-at-home, homeschooling mom like me. So I like to make my own day planner pages. I also like a large format. I wear many hats and need lots of room to plan, plan, plan. Enter the Avery View 3-ring binder. I've made a couple of these. One for business and one for the rest of my life. I might make a separate homeschool one soon too! Using an Avery View binder makes it so simple. They come with clear pockets on the outside of the binder. You just slip your cover into the pockets and wahlaa, you've got a custom made, gorgeous planner binder! You can make day planners as simple or ornate as you want. Just remember, you want to use flat embellishments, and not too many layers of paper so the finished product will slip into the pockets. The pockets are pretty tight, especially on the spine. Ready? Let's get started on your planner cover. You will need the following supplies: - a binder with clear pockets on the front and spine. Mine is designed for standard 8.5 x 11 paper, but you can buy smaller binders too.
- scrapbook paper (For the extra large planner shown here I used pink 12 x 12 card stock and a floral paper. For a standard binder you can use 8.5 x 11 paper or cut 12 x 12 paper to fit.
- scrapbook tape runner, or any two sided tape, or glue stick.
- ribbon or a strip of coordinating paper
- sticker letters, or you can use a die cut machine, or cricut if you have one
- your choice of embellishments - I used a ribbon slide (buckle), solid eyelets, a brad, a silk flower, and a preprinted vellum quote
You will also need some simple tools: - scissors
- paper trimmer (not absolutely necessary, but really helpful)
- pencil
- ruler
- fine point marker
- xyron or vellum tape (optional)
- eyelet setting tool/kit (optional - you can just use brads)
Make a Planner Binder: Part 1
Your first step in designing your planner binder, is to measure and mark the scrapbook paper to fit the front pocket. You will repeat this for the spine pocket also. Mark it a little shy of the edges or it will be too tight and will buckle. Using a paper trimmer if you have one, or scissors if you don't, trim off the excess paper. After cutting you can try slipping it into the pocket of the binder, to see if it will fit. As long as you don't use ribbon (like I did), you can always trim a little off later if needed.

Cut a coordinating strip of scrapbook paper for the edge. For this large day planner binder, I cut it about 3 inches wide. Using scrapbook adhesive, two-sided tape, or a glue stick, attach it to the first piece along the left edge.
