Paint a Wood File Box

Organize Your Papers Beautifully

painted wood file box

Tired of ugly stacks of paper? With this hand painted wood file box, you can turn those paper stacks into something attractive. Now I keep my paper pile organized and neat in this handy wood box.

I purchased this box some time ago, and used it as is for a while, before I decided what I wanted to do with it. Walking through Home Depot one day, I saw these carved wood medallions and inspiration struck. You can change the look of it by using different paint colors. You can also skip the crackle finish, or even use stain if you prefer.

Looking for an idea for a gift for dad? Homemade gifts for men are hard to find. By changing the paint colors, this file box would make a great gift for him.

My box measures about 14.5" wide x 6.5" deep x 6.5" high. You can use any box that a file folder will fit in. Besides the box itself, you will need a few other supplies:

  • carved wooden medallions - 2 inch square
  • acrylic paints in colors of your choice - I used black, antique white, burgundy and brown.
  • crackle medium - I used Ceramcoat crackle
  • a waterbase acrylic finish
  • spray acrylic finish (optional)

Tools:

  • 1" - 1.5" wide paint brush
  • small paint brush for edge
  • sand paper
  • paper towel

I gave the back panel a different finish so I could have two different looks. If you choose to do that you will also need:

  • decoupage medium - I used Mod Podge
  • wide sponge brush for decoupage
  • paper or fabric to cut designs from

Paint a Wood File Box Step 1: Sand & Base Coat

For a smooth finish, lightly sand the entire box. Wipe clean with a dust rag or tack cloth. While you are at it, sand the back edges of the medallions if they are rough.

Base coat the box inside and out. I used black for the base, except for the back panel. I used burgundy on the back because I wanted to make my box "reversible." That way I can have two different looks. If you don't want to do that, just paint the whole box one color. Let it dry.
