Elegant Fabric Coasters

"These beautiful fabric coasters would make great
wedding or house warming gifts for little or no money."

beverage coasters

Made from fabric scraps leftover from other sewing projects, these beverage coasters cost me nothing. Talk about a frugal homemade gift! But the recipient of the gift will never know it, especially if you use beautiful fabrics!

Even if you go out and buy fabric, you will only need about 1/6th of a yard to make between eight and eleven coasters. For that you could splurge on really elegant fabric.

You can make these in assembly line fashion for a very fast and easy gift.

Make Elegant Fabric Coasters
Step 1: Cutting

To make these elegant beverage coasters, first cut a 5 x 5 inch square paper pattern. Using a paper cutter will make this quick and easy.

If your fabric has a varied pattern like the patchwork pattern here, it may help to cut a 4.5 x 4.5 inch square (the finished dimension of each coaster) in the middle of a piece of paper, to lay over your fabric.

The easiest way to cut this is to cut in from one edge, then retape the edge after you've cut the square out.

You can lay this template on different areas of your fabric, to see how the finished coaster will look.

Skip this step if your fabric has an overall pattern or no pattern at all.

Next cut 4 coaster tops (or however many you wish) out of your fabric. Then cut the same number of pieces from your backing fabric. This can be plain or another fancy fabric if you want to make them special on both sides. I chose a plain burgundy that I already had on hand to use for mine.

Finally cut 4 pieces of felt. These will be the lining to make your beverage coasters absorbant. You will cut these about 4 1/4 inches square. I found it easier to just use my 5 x 5 pattern, then trim the excess off.

Unless your fabric is very light colored, you can use any color of felt you might have on hand. I used scraps of several colors for mine. (A great way to use up those scraps!)
